Car Emissions - Global Warming’s Major Contributor

Global Warming is a concern for everyone because we want to preserve our environment for future generations. But it appears that the earth is warming at an alarming rate. This is evident by the significant reduction of glacial ice near the North Pole. These changes appear to be affecting the behaviors of polar bears, whales and even the native Inuit and other northern peoples.

With less and less snow cover, the color of bare earth absorbs more of the sun’s rays. This accelerates the melting of the snow caps. It’s a perpetual cycle - the less snow, the more heating, and the cycle accelerates each year. Normally, the snow cover actually reflects the sun’s rays and keeps the climate consistent.

What Can We Do To Save Our Environment?

It’s been established that car emissions and coal burning are the two areas that are seriously affecting global warming. Most coal burning is done in countries such as India and China, but car emissions are undoubtedly still be the biggest threat to our environment. The economic boom of China and India will allow their average citizens to purchase automobiles. This means millions of additional vehicles adding to the problem.

We can reduce car emissions by driving less, consolidating shopping errands, and increasing our use of public transportation. If public transportation isn’t available, you can buy a hybrid or electric car or convert your internal combustion vehicle to use alternative fuels.

Alternative Fuels - Full Speed Ahead

Governments around the world are stepping up the promotion of alternative fuels to replace or augment fossil fuels. There are two reasons for this: 1) to reduce reliance on fossil fuel, and 2) to reduce carbon emissions to help reverse global warming. Naturally, alternative fuels are a great way to help save the planet.

Electric and Hybrids Cars

There is no doubt that electric and hybrid vehicle technology has increased dramatically. All major car manufacturers offer both of these alternative fuel burning vehicles. You will be pleasantly surprised that electric and hybrid technology has been implemented in SUVs and even pickup trucks.

The electric vehicle is ideal for those who don’t have a long commute or drive short distances. However, the limitation of the car battery is one disadvantage to this technology at the current time. On the other hand, Hybrid vehicles have the flexibility to use straight gasoline or a combination of ethanol and gasoline. In fact, many models can run on 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, otherwise known as E85.
